Biomarkers Overview
Biomarkers are genetic changes or characteristics found in your tumor that help doctors understand how your cancer behaves. A biomarker is any molecule measured in tumor tissue, blood, or other bodily fluids. Testing for biomarkers, or “biological marker,” gives your care team valuable information about which treatments may work best for you.
Knowing your biomarkers can open the door to targeted therapies and clinical trials designed for your specific cancer type. These treatments focus on the unique biology of your tumor, offering more personalized and effective options.
Ask your doctor whether you have had biomarker testing, also known as molecular profiling, and what the results mean for your treatment plan. If testing hasn’t been done, your care team can help you take that step.
